Two in One Flesh

The STORY of the resources available from Two in One Flesh

Four couples and a Priest: Brian and Maureen Devine, Mark and Liz Dutton, Maurice and Margaret Magee, Peter and Maureen Watson and Fr Frank O’Sullivan, came together about 15 years ago as a result of their mutual concerns regarding active, ongoing, verbal and visual support for marriage in the Church. They have written various publications including the booklet Two in One Flesh (TIOF), which eventually became the name of their small but dynamic and effective group. This was the culmination of a report they sent to the bishops of England and Wales. It was three years in the making and set out their considered experience and vision of marriage, including what they saw was needed to be done to increase the profile of marriage in the Church. Following an enthusiastic reception from many of the bishops, they put their time and money into producing and publishing not only TIOF, but also a trilogy of books I AM WITH YOU –  liturgical Years A, B and C.  Bernard and Maureen Jarvis had started working with the group remotely by now.  These resources have helped married couples, primarily in England but also worldwide, to relate to what God’s Word in the Scriptures used for the Sunday Mass Readings, could be saying to them about their relationship. The aim is to support their primary vocation – to love one another as deeply as they can and to share the fruits of that love with their children, wider family, Church and society as a whole.

This was followed by the publication of a trilogy of On-Line Word.doc Books, which were  a reduction  to 60 words of  the Sunday Mass Scripture Reading reflections found in the I AM WITH YOU series.  These have been placed in Newsletters, Bulletins and Websites.  One has simply to download free from the website, ‘cut and paste’ and apply the relevant liturgical week’s reflection to the medium being used. TIOF’s desire throughout all of their work has been to support, encourage, inspire, challenge and motivate couples to deepen their relationship with one another and with God. MARRIAGE MATTERS is used by Organisations, Parishes and Diocese, nationally and internationally. Its sole purpose is to be freely and readily available, inspiring and enhancing relationships and heightening the profile of Marriage: its sanctity, and fundamental significance to our Church and our world.

Currently they await the publishing of their latest booklet YOUR WEDDING DAY. It will be available for priests and those involved in Marriage Preparation, but its content is specifically created for couples to choose personally the most  fitting and appropriate Scripture readings  for their wedding. Each possible text has been ‘broken open’ and exposed to a reflection by members of TIOF, set in a marital context, based on experience, where couples can perhaps more readily resonate to this or that reading.

Finally, the group have put together a short Course or Best Practice ideas to aid folk. In view of the current circumstances (Covid-19), this might be given by ZOOM to a maximum of six couples at a time. It could be presented over 4 evening sessions with ‘homework’ in-between. There will be no charge for the course, but each participant/couple would ideally need to have a copy of the Book  I AM WITH YOU Year A.
